The story

Bred for centuries as a palace companion in China from Tibetan stock, the Shih Tzu, whose name means lion dog, lived a pampered life among royalty. It remains a devoted lapdog to this day.

Training

Shih Tzus are people-pleasers but can be stubborn, especially with house-training, so patient, positive, consistent sessions work best.

Grooming

The long double coat needs daily brushing to prevent mats, or a short puppy clip to cut the work. Keep the face and eyes clean.

Food & diet

About 0.5 to 1 cup of small-breed food a day, split into two meals.

Exercise

Low. A short daily walk and some indoor play meet their needs.

Health to watch

Prone to eye problems, dental disease and breathing issues from the flat face. Routine dental and eye care help.

Fun fact. The Shih Tzu was so prized in imperial China that for years the breed was kept secret from the outside world.

Frequently asked questions

Do Shih Tzus shed?
Very little. They have hair rather than fur, so they shed minimally, but the coat needs regular grooming to stay tangle-free.
Are Shih Tzus good apartment dogs?
Yes. They are small, friendly and low energy, which makes them ideal for apartment living.
Are Shih Tzus easy to train?
They are willing but a little stubborn, and house-training in particular takes patience and consistency.
