The story

Developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 1800s by Lord Tweedmouth to retrieve waterfowl on land and lake, the Golden pairs a feather-soft mouth with a sunny temperament that makes it one of the world's best therapy and family dogs.

Training

Goldens are quick, willing students that love positive reinforcement. They excel at obedience, retrieving games, agility and trick training.

Grooming

Brush the water-repellent double coat two or three times a week, and daily in shedding season. Trim the feathering and check the ears after every swim.

Food & diet

Roughly 2 to 3 cups of quality food daily in two meals. Goldens love food and treats, so keep an eye on the waistline.

Exercise

About an hour a day of active play. They adore swimming, fetch and having a real job to do.

Health to watch

A breed with a higher cancer risk, plus hip dysplasia and heart issues such as SAS. Buy from health-tested lines.

Fun fact. Golden Retrievers are so soft-mouthed they can carry a raw egg without cracking it.

Frequently asked questions

Are Golden Retrievers easy to train?
Very. Goldens are intelligent and eager to please, so they pick up commands quickly with reward-based training, which is why they are common service and therapy dogs.
Do Golden Retrievers shed?
Yes, quite a lot. The dense double coat sheds year round and heavily in spring and autumn, so brush several times a week.
Are Goldens good first dogs?
Yes. Their friendly, trainable nature makes them forgiving of beginner mistakes, as long as you can meet their exercise needs.
