Short legs, huge personality.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a small herding breed with short legs, big ears and a bright, bold character. Smart and active, it was the favourite breed of Queen Elizabeth II.
Bred in Pembrokeshire, Wales to herd cattle by nipping at their heels, the Corgi is a true herding dog in a small frame. Royal favour, especially from Queen Elizabeth II, made it world famous.
Corgis are quick, willing learners that need a job. Channel the herding drive into training, games and sport, and manage the tendency to nip and bark.
Brush the double coat a couple of times a week, and daily during heavy seasonal sheds, since Corgis shed a surprising amount.
About 1 to 1.5 cups of quality food a day. Corgis gain weight easily, which strains the long back, so measure meals.
Moderate to high. Daily walks plus play and training satisfy this active little herder.
Prone to back problems, hip dysplasia and obesity. Weight control protects the spine and joints.
Fun fact. Queen Elizabeth II owned more than 30 Pembroke Welsh Corgis during her reign.
