Cuba's cheerful velcro companion
The Havanese is a small, sturdy toy breed and the national dog of Cuba, known for its silky coat and endlessly affectionate, people-loving nature. Playful, smart, and adaptable, it thrives as a close companion and bonds so tightly to its family that it is often called a velcro dog.
The Havanese descends from small Bichon-type dogs brought to Cuba by Spanish settlers, where they were bred as pampered companions for the island's wealthy families. After the Cuban Revolution a handful of dogs carried abroad by emigrants saved the breed from near extinction and formed the basis of today's population.
Havanese are intelligent and quick to learn, responding best to gentle, reward-based methods and short, fun sessions. Early socialization helps, and patience pays off with house-training, which can take time for this small breed.
The long, silky double coat needs brushing several times a week to prevent mats, with many owners opting for a shorter clip for easier care. Routine ear cleaning, nail trims, and tear-stain wiping round out their grooming needs.
Feed a quality diet formulated for small or toy breeds, measuring portions to avoid weight gain. Splitting meals into two servings suits their small stomachs.
A couple of short daily walks plus indoor play meet its moderate energy needs. The breed also enjoys learning tricks and games that keep its clever mind busy.
Generally long-lived and healthy, the breed can be prone to patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, eye conditions such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, deafness, and dental issues common to small dogs.
Fun fact. Nicknamed the Havana Silk Dog, the Havanese is the only dog breed native to Cuba.
