  • Short lifespan
  • Very large food and vet costs
  • Prone to bloat, a deadly emergency
  • Needs plenty of space

The story

Bred in Germany to hunt boar and guard estates, the Great Dane was refined into a noble, even-tempered giant. Its blend of size and gentleness made it one of the most striking companion dogs.

Training

Danes are intelligent and willing, and because of their size, early training and socialisation are essential so the adult dog has good manners.

Grooming

The short coat needs only a weekly brush. Their size makes nail care and bathing the bigger chores.

Food & diet

Large amounts, often 6 to 10 cups of large-breed food a day, fed in two or more meals to reduce bloat risk.

Exercise

Moderate. Daily walks and play are enough, with care to avoid over-exercising growing puppies.

Health to watch

Prone to bloat, heart disease and joint problems, with a short lifespan. Feed carefully and learn the signs of bloat.

Fun fact. A Great Dane named Zeus held the record as the tallest dog ever, standing about 1.1 metres at the shoulder.

Frequently asked questions

Are Great Danes good family dogs?
Yes. They are gentle, patient and affectionate, but their enormous size means they need supervision around small children and plenty of space.
How long do Great Danes live?
Only about 7 to 10 years, which is typical for giant breeds. Good breeding and careful feeding support a healthier life.
Do Great Danes need a lot of exercise?
A moderate amount. Daily walks suffice, and you should avoid hard exercise in puppies to protect developing joints.
