The Bulldog is a medium companion breed with a stocky body, wrinkled face and calm, friendly temperament. It is a low-energy housemate and a beloved national symbol of Britain.

Great points

  • Calm and easygoing indoors
  • Gentle and friendly with family
  • Low exercise needs
  • Rarely aggressive

Things to consider

  • Serious breathing and heat issues
  • Short lifespan for its size
  • Wrinkles need daily cleaning
  • Can be stubborn

The story

Once bred for the brutal sport of bull-baiting, the Bulldog was re-shaped after the sport was banned into the dozy, affectionate companion and enduring national symbol of British grit.

Training

Bulldogs are smart but famously stubborn. Short, patient, reward-based sessions work best, and early socialisation brings out their sweet side.

Grooming

Clean and dry between the skin wrinkles every day to avoid fold dermatitis, and give the short coat a weekly brush.

Food & diet

Roughly 1.5 to 2 cups a day. The breed piles on weight quickly, which worsens its breathing, so keep meals measured.

Exercise

Light, cool-weather walks. Like the Frenchie it is flat-faced and overheats fast, so avoid midday summer outings.

Health to watch

Breathing issues (BOAS), hip dysplasia, skin-fold infections and cherry eye. A good breeder and a cool home help a lot.

Fun fact. Many Bulldog puppies are born by caesarean section because their large heads make natural birth difficult.

Frequently asked questions

Are Bulldogs lazy?
They are low energy and love a nap, but they still need short daily walks and weight control to stay healthy and breathe easily.
Are Bulldogs good with children?
Yes. Bulldogs are gentle, patient and sturdy, which makes them a calm and affectionate family companion.
Why do Bulldogs have breathing problems?
Their flat face and short airway, known as a brachycephalic build, restrict airflow, so they snore, tire fast and overheat easily.
