Gentle, wrinkly and unflappable.
The Bulldog is a medium companion breed with a stocky body, wrinkled face and calm, friendly temperament. It is a low-energy housemate and a beloved national symbol of Britain.
Once bred for the brutal sport of bull-baiting, the Bulldog was re-shaped after the sport was banned into the dozy, affectionate companion and enduring national symbol of British grit.
Bulldogs are smart but famously stubborn. Short, patient, reward-based sessions work best, and early socialisation brings out their sweet side.
Clean and dry between the skin wrinkles every day to avoid fold dermatitis, and give the short coat a weekly brush.
Roughly 1.5 to 2 cups a day. The breed piles on weight quickly, which worsens its breathing, so keep meals measured.
Light, cool-weather walks. Like the Frenchie it is flat-faced and overheats fast, so avoid midday summer outings.
Breathing issues (BOAS), hip dysplasia, skin-fold infections and cherry eye. A good breeder and a cool home help a lot.
Fun fact. Many Bulldog puppies are born by caesarean section because their large heads make natural birth difficult.
