The story

Descended from the Techichi dogs of ancient Mexico, the Chihuahua takes its name from the Mexican state where it was discovered in the 1800s. It became one of the most recognisable toy breeds in the world.

Training

Chihuahuas are clever but bold and can be willful, so early socialisation and gentle, consistent training prevent small-dog snappiness.

Grooming

Smooth coats need only an occasional brush, while long coats need brushing a few times a week. Dental care is very important.

Food & diet

About 0.25 to 0.5 cup of small-breed food a day in small meals to prevent low blood sugar.

Exercise

Low. Short walks and indoor play meet their needs, but they enjoy being active.

Health to watch

Prone to dental disease, luxating patella, collapsing trachea and heart issues. Dental care and weight control help.

Fun fact. Chihuahuas often live into their late teens, among the longest lifespans of any dog breed.

Frequently asked questions

Are Chihuahuas good with children?
They do best with older, gentle children. Chihuahuas are tiny and fragile and can be snappy if handled roughly, so calmer homes suit them better.
Do Chihuahuas bark a lot?
They can. Chihuahuas are alert and bold, so they bark at noises and strangers, and early training helps manage it.
How long do Chihuahuas live?
A long time, often 14 to 18 years, which is among the longest of any breed.
