The tiniest dog with the biggest heart.
The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed, with an outsized, confident personality. Devoted and alert, it bonds intensely with its person and makes a portable, long-lived companion.
Descended from the Techichi dogs of ancient Mexico, the Chihuahua takes its name from the Mexican state where it was discovered in the 1800s. It became one of the most recognisable toy breeds in the world.
Chihuahuas are clever but bold and can be willful, so early socialisation and gentle, consistent training prevent small-dog snappiness.
Smooth coats need only an occasional brush, while long coats need brushing a few times a week. Dental care is very important.
About 0.25 to 0.5 cup of small-breed food a day in small meals to prevent low blood sugar.
Low. Short walks and indoor play meet their needs, but they enjoy being active.
Prone to dental disease, luxating patella, collapsing trachea and heart issues. Dental care and weight control help.
