The story

Named for King Charles II, who adored toy spaniels, the Cavalier was recreated in the 20th century to match the dogs seen in old paintings. It became a gentle, devoted companion above all else.

Training

Cavaliers are eager to please and respond beautifully to gentle, reward-based training. Early socialisation makes them confident little companions.

Grooming

Brush the silky coat several times a week to prevent mats, especially behind the ears, and keep the ears clean.

Food & diet

About 0.5 to 1 cup of quality small-breed food a day, split into two meals, with care not to overfeed.

Exercise

Moderate. A daily walk plus play is plenty, and they happily settle on the sofa afterwards.

Health to watch

The breed has a high rate of mitral valve heart disease, plus syringomyelia and eye and ear issues. Health testing matters.

Fun fact. Some Cavaliers have a lozenge, a chestnut spot on the top of the head prized in the Blenheim colour.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cavaliers good for first-time owners?
Yes. They are gentle, friendly and easy to train, which makes them a great first dog, as long as you are ready for their health needs and need for company.
Do Cavalier King Charles Spaniels bark a lot?
Not much. They are quiet and people-focused, though they may bark to greet or alert.
Are Cavaliers healthy?
They are loving but prone to inherited heart disease and other conditions, so buy from a breeder who tests, and budget for vet care.
