  • Bored Aussies get destructive

The story

Ranchers in the American West refined this herding dog in the 1800s, possibly from European stock that arrived via Australia, which is how it got its name. Its agility and brains made it a star on farms and in dog sports.

Training

Aussies are quick, willing learners that need mental and physical challenges. Channel the herding drive into obedience, agility or herding to avoid problem behaviours.

Grooming

Brush the medium double coat a couple of times a week, more in shedding season, and check for mats behind the ears and legs.

Food & diet

Around 2 to 3 cups of quality food a day, matched to their high activity.

Exercise

Very high. Plan vigorous daily activity plus training or a canine sport to satisfy the working drive.

Health to watch

Watch for hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and sensitivity to certain drugs linked to the MDR1 gene.

Fun fact. Many Australian Shepherds are born with a naturally short, bobbed tail.

Frequently asked questions

Are Australian Shepherds good pets?
Yes for active owners. They are loyal and brilliant, but they need a great deal of exercise and mental work, so they suit busy, engaged homes rather than quiet ones.
Do Australian Shepherds shed?
Yes, a fair amount year round and more in seasonal sheds, so brush a few times a week.
Do Aussies bark a lot?
They can be vocal, especially when bored or herding. Exercise and training keep barking down.
